Verizon sells Galaxy Tab for $599.99

Well, we finally have a price on this thing! America's largest carrierVerizon Wireless  has announced plans to sell Samsung's Galaxy Tab for... $599.99. The 3G, Android 2.2-based unit (which will be loaded with V CAST apps, of course) will hit retail on November 11th, and since it's being sold at full price, a data plan (which starts at $20 per month for 1GB) is completely optional. It looks like customers will have some fairly strong choices on Big Red, considering that the impossible-to-ignore iPad is being made available in Verizon's stores as well. The Verizon Wireless Samsung Galaxy Tab offers a new level of temptation, and a new level of frustration, for would-be Android tablet owners. What the heck is a tablet computer?

Mainstream America might never have known before Apple bushwhacked its way through technical barriers, misconceptions and skeptics stake its claim on tablet computing with the iPad. The breakthrough tablet, which Apple still struggles to keep in stock, dodged mistakes made by previous tablets by making computing with your fingers easy, relatively inexpensive , and above all, fun.

But no company can dominate an entire market forever – even one that essentially created it. Having eyed Apple enviously for months, other companies are now attempting to elbow their way in on the tablet space. And Samsung is among the first to the table with the Galaxy Tab. Can the supersized version of the company’s successful Galaxy S smartphones compete? We stacked it side by side with the Apple iPad to find out.

Samsung confirmed its Mobile World Congress plans early with details of its two flagships. The Galaxy Tab II is now slightly larger than the iPad it goes up against with a 10.1-inch, 1280x800 display much like the Motorola Xoom. It uses what should be a stock version of Android 3.0 and runs on a 1GHz (likely dual-core) processor that can record 1080p video from the rear eight-megapixel camera.

The Galaxy S II mostly fits recent expectations and centers on a dual-core 1GHz processor, a sharper 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen, HSPA+ 3G and an eight-megapixel camera with 1080p video. It's now known to come with either 16GB or 32GB of included storage and to support mobile HDTV viewing, though in which countries wasn't mentioned.

Software will be a key factor as it will now have the same Music Hub and Readers Hub as the Galaxy Tab along with a Games Hub and the usual Social Hub. More details are expected to come from Samsung's press event in Barcelona this evening.
